Komodo Selected As SEA Games Mascot

Modo and Modi are names of the Games’ mascot adopted from an endangered species komodo (Varanus komodoensis) which can only be found in Komodo Island, Flores East Nusa Tenggara Province. The appearance of the mascot was represented in a contemporary dance during the ceremony titled ‘Indonesia Bangga’ (Indonesia is Proud).

Rachmat Gobel, Chairman of the Indonesia SEA Games Organizing Committee (INASOC) asked for supports from all over the country to make the Games held from Nov. 11-22 a success.
“It is not only the responsibility of the government, INASOC, and the Indonesia National Sports Committee (KONI), but also ours to succeed the Games,” he said.

“SEA Games will be our momentum to bring back Indonesia’s past glory. Let’s work together to achieve our goals, to become a good host country and overall champion,” said Rita Subowo, President of the Indonesia Olympic Committee (KOI).

There are 43 sports to compete at the Games held all over Palembang and Jakarta. Each city will hold 22 sports, with football is held in both cities.

The ceremony was attended by almost 1,000 invitees including ambassadors of the Southeast Asian countries. A song titled ‘Kita Bisa’ (We Can) composed by Indonesian song writer Yovie Widianto was also introduced.

Indonesian famous singers and bands, such as Indonesian Idols, Dira Sugandi, Eka Deli, Lea Simanjuntak, Vidi Aldiano, D’Bagindas, Changchuters, Yovie and The Nuno also outstanding performances. Famous MCs Indra Bekti, Choky Sitohang, Ayu Dewi, and Tamara Geraldine also took part in the ceremony.

Several national athletes prepared for the Games appeared in the ceremony, including two time gold medalists, sprinter Suryo Agung Wibowo and karate kata team Faizal Zainuddin, Fidelys Lolobua, and Aswar.

In Bunderan HI, fireworks and laser works describing Modo and Modi marked the ceremony. The ceremony was sponsored by Panasonic, one of the Games’ prestigious partners.
